Top quality treatment in University Hospital

Tyks Orto is a unit for the treatment and research of musculoskeletal diseases at Turku University Hospital (Tyks). We promote mobility and joy of life, around the clock, for all ages.

Our team consists of top experts in musculoskeletal diseases. They ensure that you always receive the care you need. High-level scientific research and evidence-based treatment are the foundation of all our activities. In addition to treating common joint pain, we also handle the most demanding diseases and injuries.

Waiting times to treatment have increased

Due to the shortage of nursing staff and the lack of follow-up treatment units, the reduction of our surgical operations continues. Unfortunately, this has extended waiting times to treatment for planned surgeries. We are sorry for the prolonged wait

MyHealth – patient experience at the core

It is important to identify the most effective treatments and ensure the quality of care in healthcare. At Tyks Orto, we monitor the functional capacity and quality of life of our patients with electronic Omavointi questionnaires. By comparing the results of the surveys before and after treatment, we can see how our patients themselves felt about their health with the advanced treatment, i.e. the effectiveness of the treatment given.

Shoulder Osteoarthritis – exercise or joint replacement as a solution?

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the human body. For this reason, shoulder problems often cause significant difficulties for patients in daily life and present challenges for orthopedic surgeons treating them. It is estimated that up to one in five people over the age of 45 with shoulder pain have underlying shoulder osteoarthritis. Shoulder osteoarthritis is the third most common large-joint osteoarthritis after hip and knee osteoarthritis.

Outpatient surgery helps alleviate prolonged waiting times at Tyks Orto

Last autumn, Tyks Orto performed already 30% of hip and knee primary joint replacement surgeries as outpatient procedures. With the increase in outpatient surgeries, the operations at Tyks Orto have been able to be optimized, thus accelerating access to treatment for all patients. Hospital ward beds can be freed up for those patients who specifically need them. Based on the feedback collected, patients have been extremely satisfied with the smoothness of outpatient care, and almost all would choose outpatient surgery again.

Effectiveness and health benefits in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders

Musculoskeletal disorders are the most common reason for visiting a doctor in Finland. Although these conditions rarely pose a direct threat to life, they have a significant impact on people’s quality of life and functional ability. Measuring treatment effectiveness and the resulting health benefit is therefore an important tool for finding optimal solutions for funders, organizers, and patients alike.

Patient satisfaction is the best feedback

We collect feedback from all our patients through the text message feedback system and the MyHealth service (omavointi.fi). The average patient feedback score in recent years has been around 4.8, with five being the best possible rating. We are very pleased that our patients have appreciated the care they have received.
